Prof. SkibniewskiProf. Skibniewski is currently a professor of construction engineering and project management at the University of Maryland (College Park, USA). He obtained his M.Eng. degree from Warsaw University of Technology (Poland), followed by M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University (Pennsylvania, USA). Prior to his graduate studies, he worked as a civil engineer for the Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory (now Professional Services Industries, Inc.) - the oldest construction engineering consulting firm in the U.S. founded in 1881. His doctoral dissertation focused on the feasibility of robotics application in the construction industry. Prior to his current position, he was a professor of civil engineering, construction engineering and management, and associate provost at Purdue University (Indiana, USA). Earlier in his career Prof. Skibniewski created one of the first educational and research programs in construction automation and robotics in the United States, and for over two decades he has been serving as editor-in-chief of Automation in Construction, an international research journal published by Elsevier, and as North American editor of the Journal of Civil Engineering and Management published by Taylor and Francis. The author of "Robotics in Civil Engineering," a monograph book published by Computational Mechanics Publications in 1988, he has also written over 300 papers and book chapters for various scientific publication outlets. Prof. Skibniewski has been a recipient of major research awards from the U.S. National Science Foundation such as the Presidential Young Investigator Award, from American Society of Civil Engineers such as the Walter L. Huber Research Prize, from the International Association on Automation and Robotics in Construction such as the Tucker-Hasegawa Research Prize, and of other forms of scholarly recognition in the United States and abroad. He has held various endowed chairs and distinguished professorial appointments in the United States and worldwide, including University of Maryland, Arizona State University (Tempe, USA), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), National University of Singapore, University of Technology Sydney (Australia), Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua University (Beijing, China), Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Wuhan, Hubei, China), National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taipei), Chaoyang University of Technology (Taichung, Taiwan), Hanyang University (Seoul, Korea), University of Central Lancashire (U.K.), Loughborough University (U.K.), Cardiff University (Wales, U.K.), and others. He has been a recipient of Fulbright and Humboldt academic awards for research at The Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, IAE Management School at Universidad Austral (Buenos Aires, Argentina), and at the Technical University of Munich (Germany). Prof. Skibniewski served on several panels at the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and on various government and ministerial boards worldwide dealing with quality of higher education and research enterprise. He has been elected to the memberships of the Russian Academy of Engineering and the Academy of Engineering in Poland. Earlier this year, he was named a Distinguished Visiting Fellow of the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering.
